The Storm X Men 3D VR glasses are a budget smartphone headset option designed for those who enjoy watching movies. You won’t find any special features with this device, but if you’re looking for some VR glasses at the entry level, something just to watch movies on, or something slightly better than Google Cardboard, this is going to be a great choice for you. Our Storm X Men 3D VR glasses review looks at the specs, design, controls, setup, and pros and cons of this device.
Storm X Men 3D VR Glasses: Specs
|Headset Type||Smartphone VR|
|Resolution||Depends on the device|
|Field of View||120 degrees|
There are no controls or sensors to speak of with this pair of VR glasses, so those looking to play games will absolutely need to buy a separate controller. Sensors are not really needed though, since most apps will use your phone’s motion sensors. Those watching videos can probably get by just playing the video, and using earbuds with inline controls to pause and play.
Special features are not something you’ll find here either, but at this low price, you shouldn’t expect them. You get a headset that works well, with a fine build quality. You also get a nice blue light filter that works to prevent eye fatigue, especially when viewing late at night.
Pros & Cons
Storm X Men 3D VR Glasses: Design & Requirements
The design of this headset is very simplistic. For a $20+ headset, it’s certainly fine, but “amazing” is not a word you’d be heard using to describe it. It looks like you’ve got a black box on your face when you’re wearing it.
The padding that sits around your face is fine, and reasonably comfortable, especially considering the price point. This is a great beginner VR headset.
You’ll need a smartphone between 3.5″ and 5.5″, and the iOS or Android platform to use these glasses effectively. You’ll also need 3D movies or VR games. There’s no proprietary app with which to download samples or games, so you’ll need to find your own.
Storm X Men 3D VR Glasses: Controls & Display
There are no controls present on this device. In order to control your device while you’re wearing the headset, you’ll definitely need to invest in some type of external controller. These can come a bit pricey, especially for iOS, so make sure you factor that into your overall cost.
If you only watch movies, you will be fine just starting the movie, mounting your phone, and then watching it all the way through. If you want to do something other than that, you’ll need controls.
The lenses are good enough as well. They have blue light filtration, to cut down on strain. The actual image itself will depend a lot on your phone’s display, so if you have a high-quality phone, you can expect more from this VR glasses.
Storm X Men 3D VR Glasses: Setup
Setup is extremely simple. All you need to do is just slide your phone into the front cover, and lock it up. The housing seems sturdy enough, and nothing really rattles around in there. The headset was also designed in such a way that if the front cover pops off, your phone shouldn’t fall out, so there’s no need to worry about your expensive device crashing onto the floor.
The problem is in finding apps that work. Without a separate controller, gaming won’t be possible. There also isn’t any included app to find videos or other demos, so you’ll be left entirely to yourself here. You’ll also need to make sure you have a media player app that supports 3D videos. It certainly would have been better to see something more from the glasses in this regard, but this isn’t a huge problem. There are plenty of sources of VR material out there.
Storm X Men 3D VR Glasses: User Experience
Overall, the user experience is pretty good. The headset is comfortable, and light enough for long viewing sessions. It doesn’t look pretty, but it functions well.
Users have to do a lot of the work themselves, in order to find software and files that work in VR, but for the price, that’s kind of just par for the course. If you’re not willing to spend the extra money, you shouldn’t expect the extra features.
With a controller, playback control will be easy, and the controller combined with your device’s motion tracking capabilities should fulfill all the requirements for most apps. However, it’s still a little disappointing not to have even one button on the glasses, at least like the Google Cardboard.
The Storm X Men 3D VR glasses are a great entry point into the world of VR. They’re comfortable, and the lenses work well and look clear. You certainly won’t find any extra features here, and you’ll likely need an external controller to make full use of these glasses. For these reasons, it’s hard to give it a perfect score, but if you’re just looking for a way to get into the world of virtual reality, these are cheap, and they’ll certainly do the job. Just don’t expect too much, and you won’t be disappointed. Don’t forget to share your opinion of these glasses down below!
